Palmer to join Syracuse as assistant coach

Sasha Palmer will be announced as one of Syracuse’s assistant women’s basketball coaches this afternoon, team spokesman Dave Gunn said.

Palmer joins SU from the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, where she was the head coach for the past six seasons. The Mountain Cats went 14-12 last season.

She effectively replaces former Orange assistant Matt Luneau, who left Syracuse the summer before the 2012-13 season to return to his native state Vermont and coach the Enosburg Falls High School boys basketball team.

Like Luneau, Palmer will work primarily with post players. She will also serve as recruiting coordinator.

Her resignation with Division-II Pitt-Johnstown is effective June 30, the Tribune-Democrat reported. She begins work with Syracuse next week, Gunn said.

Cedric Solice, who moved from director of basketball operations to assistant coach last season — there wasn’t enough time for a national search, Gunn said — will return to his previous role. Former player Erica Morrow, who was promoted from graduate student manager to director of basketball operations is no longer on staff, Gunn said in a text message.

Head coach Quentin Hillsman was not available for comment as he is coaching the Dutch national team.

The Tribune-Democrat – based in Johnstown, Pa. – first reported her hiring by SU.
