Students unable to stream NCAA Tournament games on AirOrangeX, problem to be corrected early Friday morning

Many students were left wondering Thursday if the men’s basketball team’s postseason ban had extended to them when they were unable to stream NCAA Tournament games through AirOrangeX.

Chris Finkle, communications manager for Information Technology and Services, said there’s an issue with the Syracuse University Internet being able to stream the signal from the NCAA streaming site. Thursday was the first full day of games for the NCAA Tournament. The problem will be corrected early Friday morning, but will require AirOrangeX to briefly shut down.

“Between 6 a.m. and 6:30 a.m., AirOrangeX will go down for about a minute, or less than a minute, while they reroute network traffic,” Finkle said.

Finkle said it’s “just one of those quirky kind of things,” adding that commercials come through on the stream, but not the games themselves. ITS was first notified of the issue on Wednesday, but Finkle said it was unclear whether it was an issue with SU’s network, or with a few individual’s machines.

On Thursday, ITS became aware it was larger issue when people began contacting the department by phone and email, Finkle said. This allowed ITS staff to assess what the problem is, and how to correct it.
