Asa Goldstock named ACC Defensive Player of the Week

Eric Black | Senior Staff Writer

Asa Goldstock made eight saves in SU’s 16-11 win at then-No. 6 Northwestern.

Tuesday, Asa Goldstock was named Atlantic Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Week after her eight-save performance against then-No. 6 Northwestern. This is her second time receiving the honor in her career. Goldstock is the second Syracuse player to earn ACC recognition this year, the first being Emily Hawryschuk with ACC Player of the Week honor on Feb. 11.

In SU’s (5-1) second ranked matchup of the season, Goldstock stayed in net for all 60 minutes. The senior limited Northwestern to 11 goals, well short of the Wildcats’ average of 21.6 goals per game, the highest in the country. Goldstock also corralled a season-high five ground balls in that game.

Two weeks ago, SU was in desperate need of momentum. In their first ranked matchup of the season, now-No. 3 Stony Brook was firmly in command. As the deficit swelled to five, head coach Gary Gait pulled the senior goalie.

“If that’s what’s needed the rest of the season, that’s perfectly fine, as long as we start winning games,” Goldstock said three days later.

Since losing to Stony Brook, the Orange have won four straight and Goldstock has conceded a total of 13 goals. She had clean sheets against Albany and Binghamton.

Goldstock is currently second in SU history with 499 career saves. Her 500th likely will come on Friday against No. 9 Maryland (1-2). That game is Syracuse’s senior night, the beginning of alumni weekend and the final game in the Carrier Dome this season.
