Student in fair condition after being hit by car on Clarendon Street

A Syracuse University student who was hit by a car Friday on Clarendon Street is in fair condition at Upstate University Hospital, a nursing supervisor said.

Yang Bai, 22, is the student who was hurt, Syracuse police Sgt. Gary Bulinksi said on Saturday. The accident happened when Amanda Sears’ 2002 Subaru backed up and hit Bai, a 2007 Subaru driving on Clarendon and a few parked cars, he said.

Bulinski said the accident happened because of a mechanical issue. On Friday, he said the issue was possibly with the transmission or accelerator of Sears’ car. Sears, 22, is also an SU student. No tickets were issued.

Fair condition means a person is conscious — but could be uncomfortable — and that indicators are favorable, according to the American Hospital Association. The nursing supervisor at University Hospital declined to give her name.

At least four cars were damaged in the accident, which happened on the 100 block of Clarendon Street near Livingston Avenue. Syracuse police got to the crash a little after 3:30 p.m. Friday, and blocked off part of Clarendon until about 5 p.m.
