Southerland to play for 76ers, Warriors in Summer Leagues
James Southerland will play for the Philadelphia 76ers and the Golden State Warriors in the Orlando and Las Vegas Summer Leagues respectively, one of his agents, Andy Shiffman, said.
The Orlando Summer League runs July 7-12 and the Las Vegas Summer League plays July 17-22.
During the second round of Thursday night’s NBA Draft, Southerland turned down the San Antonio Spurs when they ask about him going as the 58th overall pick, his high school coach Ron Naclerio told The Daily Orange.
The Spurs said they would require he play overseas for a year, and Southerland declined when he did not receive guarantees for the following season, Shiffman said. Southerland will go overseas with some guarantee for the 2014-14 season, Shiffman said.
The Warriors finished the 2012-13 season 47-35 before losing to the Spurs 4-2 in the Western Conference semifinals.
Philadelphia drafted Southerland’s former SU teammate Michael Carter-Williams with the No. 11 pick in Thursday night’s draft. The 76ers were 34-48 in 2012-13, missing out on the playoffs, before head coach Doug Collins resigned in April.
