Michael Carter-Williams will declare for the 2013 NBA Draft, SU Athletics announced in a press release Wednesday.

Carter-Williams will leave Syracuse after two seasons with the team. He became the Orange’s starting point guard this past season and started all 40 games. Carter-Williams finished with an average of 11.9 points and 7.3 assists per game, which ranks him fifth in the nation. He also averaged 2.78 steals per game, good for fourth in the nation.

“Michael has informed me of his intention to enter the NBA Draft,” Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim said in the press release. “He’s coming off a tremendous season and we appreciate all he’s done for Syracuse basketball. We wish Michael the best of luck as he pursues a pro career.”

Some of Carter-Williams’ best games this season came in the NCAA Tournament, including a brilliant 24-point performance in Syracuse’s 61-50 win over Indiana in the Sweet 16.

Most NBA mock drafts have Carter-Williams being drafted early in the first round. Draftexpress.com has him going 12th, while a mock draft on ESPN.com has him going ninth.

Carter-Williams is the first Syracuse player so far to enter the 2013 NBA Draft.
