Gillibrand declared projected winner in Senate race

New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand won her campaign for reelection Tuesday night, beating Republican candidate Wendy Long, according to The New York Times.

Gillibrand was elected to the Senate in 2009, filling current Secretary of State Hilary Clinton’s seat. Prior to being a senator, Gillibrand served in the House of Representatives, representing New York’s 20th Congressional District, according to her website.

Long, an attorney, beat two other challengers in the GOP primary last June. She currently serves as chief counsel for the Judicial Crisis Network and as a member of Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney’s Justice Advisory Committee, according to her website.

Polls in New York state closed at 9 p.m. and Gillibrand was declared the projected winner soon after.
