DPS sends out email to address rumor of gang violence

At 10:21 p.m. Monday, the Department of Public Safety Chief Tony Callisto and Student Association President Dylan Lustig sent an email out to students addressing crime in the East neighborhood and Marshall Street areas.

Rumors circling around campus that students “may have been or could be the victim of crimes being perpetrated by non-students as some sort of initiation of gang activities” are unsubstantiated, according to the email. DPS and the Syracuse Police Department do not believe these rumors are true, according to the email.

Though there have been several DPS alerts sent out to students since the start of the semester, the increase is not unusual compared to years past, according to the email.

In the email, it was suggested that students stay away from Acropolis Pizza late at night, as the establishment has been a hotspot for crime recently, and to be aware of unknown guests at house parties.
