SU offers clincs for remaining vaccines

Syracuse University Health Services will administer its remaining H1N1 vaccines at walk-in clinics on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, said Carol Masiclat, a Health Services spokeswoman. Approximately 1,800 to 1,850 injections and 850 doses of nasal mist are still available.

Students will be able to walk into the Health Services building on Waverly Avenue from 1 to 4 p.m. on one of the three days or can call Health Services to schedule an appointment for a vaccination.

Health Services decided to switch from having scheduled clinics at Flanagan Gymnasium to walk-in clinics at its building because of the ‘unexpected’ low turnout for the vaccine at Thursday’s and Friday’s clinics, Masiclat said.

Five hundred doses of nasal mist were set aside for Thursday’s clinic, but only 150 doses were administered. On Friday, 1,000 injections were supposed to be administered. Between 550 and 600 shots were actually given, Masiclat said.

The supply of swine flu vaccine at SU should be enough to meet the current demand, she said. But SU will order more doses of the vaccine if demand increases after Winter Break.

‘We weren’t sure how many people were going to come out for the vaccines,’ Masiclat said. ‘The numbers were good, but they were just a little bit lower than we expected. Since the number was lower, Health Services realized that it was more feasible to have (the clinics) down in the Health Services building.’

Gov. David Paterson announced Dec. 4 that he wished to get as many New York state college students as possible vaccinated before Winter Break.

Students traveling abroad spring semester are especially encouraged to get the vaccine, Masiclat said.
